a month of gratitude

My eyes are overwhelmed by the green all around me

Yet I know that soon it will fade into normality

Gratitude for me means to take a bit of this feeling

And putting it somewhere safe.

“The root of joy is gratefulness. We tend to misunderstand the link between joy and gratefulness. We notice that joyful people are grateful and suppose that they are grateful for their joy. But the reverse is true: their joy springs from gratefulness.” – Brother David Steindl-Rast*

Not long ago, I practised gratitude for several weeks with a good friend, sending each other whatsapp messages each evening. It was a simple process, slowly building up and changing my attitude over time. So powerful, that I wanted others to have the same experience! So when I spoke with a friend who had a similar experience, the idea was born – why not create a movement. Let’s practise gratitude together! In order to harvest the benefits, it’s necessary to stick to the practice for some time and since May is about to begin, the project is now called “May – a month of gratitude”. It’s simple:

During the month of May, ask yourself each evening “What am I grateful for today?”. Try to find three things. Some days this might seem difficult, some days you might find even more. Record your answers in any way you like: For yourself, e.g. in a journal. Teaming up and sharing it with each other. Or maybe even publicly on your blog 😉

I am looking forward to living this experience with you!

earth on a leaf

Have you ever noticed how autumn leaves look like photographs from the earth taken from the height of an airplane? The veins looking like streets or rivers, the brown areas could be buildings or swamps. Green could be forest or grasslands, same for yellow…
Seeing the leaf today reminded me of the great book Presence – Human Purpose and the Field of the Future. In the very first chapter, they quote Henri Bortoft, a researcher who works on Goethean Science: “Everything is in everything” and “The part is a place for the presencing of the whole”.

So, if I look close enough at the leaf, maybe I will discover myself somewhere? I think I would like to be in the green part then.
